Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus Bring Year-Round Joy: A Conversation

Posted on June 14th, 2024.

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus are more than just beloved characters; they are a dynamic duo that brings joy and magic to people of all ages. At Majestic Nubian Santa Claus, based in Harker Heights, Texas, we pride ourselves on delivering enchanting and memorable performances that go beyond the traditional holiday season.

In this conversation, we will explore the world of Majestic Nubian Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, exploring what inspired them to portray these iconic figures, their unique approach to performances, and the impact they have on their audiences.

Inspiration

What inspired you to portray Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus in your performances?

Santa Claus: Being able to do something that I didn’t see when I was a child. When I was younger, I never saw Santa, so now I am Santa.

Mrs. Claus: I wanted to show the world that Mrs. Claus is much more than someone who stays in the kitchen and bakes cookies (she’s Santa’s helpmate and side by side they enjoy having adventure after adventure throughout the world).

How did you come up with the concept of Majestic Nubian Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus?

Santa Claus: For a few seasons we sought out our identity of who we are personally and how that could flow over into the community. The challenge was finding a name which fit our personality. During our very first professional season, during a visit to an elementary school, the principal took one look at us and stated, “wow you both look so Majestic” (and thus gave us the name). Nubian pays homage to our ancestors and who we are.

Performance Experience

Could you share some memorable moments from your performances?

Santa Claus: While visiting Dallas, Texas, I asked a little girl what she would like for Christmas. She leaned in real close and whispered in my ear that she didn’t want anything. Her only request was for her mother to be happy (because she works nights and part-time during the day). Mrs. Claus and I looked at one another and while smiling told the little girl how proud we were of her selfless request and that everything was going to be alright. While walking over to mom, Mrs. Claus handed me one of my magical golden Christmas coins. I placed the coin into mom’s hand and told her how proud we are of the hard work and dedication she provides to her daughter and how much she is loved. A tear of joy ran down mom’s cheek, a smile crossed mom’s face and low and behold, she stated that she indeed was happy.

How do you tailor your performances to different events and audiences?

Santa Claus: We have a variety of wardrobe attire and props for different events. During the initial meeting with a client, we ask for their vision of the event. Whether ski lodge, ballroom or even a traditional evening at home, there is something for everyone. When it comes to performing flexibility is the key. As a team (ourselves and the client) we may have a game plan of the event. When it’s show time, you must be able to feel the crowd and adapt to what the needs of the crowd are, while still fulfilling the desires of the client. We choose to be ready for anything from storytelling, singing, and magic to how much time we must spend with everyone.

What sets your portrayal of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus apart from traditional portrayals?

Santa Claus: It is our believability brought to life through performance that changes with different events. Many clients are looking for the traditional Santa Claus as seen on TV, and I’m much more than that. I am real and as Santa, I don’t wear the same traditional red suit everyday (truly it’s reserved for Christmas Eve so the reindeer can see me). Something I enjoy sharing in my storytelling, is that the Santas seen in movies, tv, stores or even storybooks are all my stand-ins (or substitutes for the little ones). I can’t possibly do all those things AND be at the North Pole preparing gifts for the upcoming Christmas Eve. If you see me at an event, that means something happened to my stand-in and Mrs. Claus and I had to come down from the North Pole to find out what is going on.

Impact and Joy

How do you see your performances bringing joy to people of all ages?

Santa Claus: It is usually the smiles and the expressions of love whether a hug or verbal ‘thank you Santa” or even a gift (can you imagine a gift for Santa, how wonderful). I often get our seasoned children (our seniors who are young at heart) looking at me, and I’ll say I remember when you were knee high, and I dropped off that Raggedy Ann doll or toy car you asked for. There will be a twinkle in their eyes as they say, “you remember!” and then they ask how I knew they had one. I just laugh and ask if they were happy, and they’ll respond with a “yes”. That is a moment that stays with them for the rest of their lives—the day they interacted with Santa Claus.

Can you share any heartwarming stories or feedback from your audience?

Santa Claus: We often see children who have a different skin tone from their adoptive parents. The feedback we receive from those parents (often between tears), is that their children say, “Santa and Mrs. Claus look like me,” and they have the biggest smile on their face. That is what really touches us.

What do you hope people take away from experiencing Majestic Nubian Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus?

Santa Claus: Our goal is that our clients have a wonderful experience they haven’t seen or felt before. We hope that they walk away knowing if but for a moment, someone believes in them, no matter who they are or what they look like.

What we do is that whenever there is a disaster in the state of Texas, (and after emergency response has given all clear) we will come together as a collective, convoy to that location (called a convoy of toys) delivering toys, shelter or food vouchers to children and families effected by the disaster.

There are various organizations one can join for further information and understand that once you get involved in this journey, there is such a variety of things you can do to make a difference in someone’s life.

Santa Claus: Seeing day to day people who care for one another. We have a couple of mentors that we confide in, who have watched over us along the way. Plus, we really enjoy viewing the movie "Christmas Chronicles" (it’s very accurate, while being adventurous).
